Terry Haass

Printmaker, painter, sculptor and archeologist was born in Czechoslovakia in 1923. Fleeing Nazism, she would relocate to Paris in the 1930s and in 1941 through Lisbon would land in New York where she received a scholarship to the Art Students’ League. Haass took lessons by sculptor Osip Zadkine and began working at the experimental and influential workshop, Atelier 17, in 1946 where she met Pollock, de Kooning, Gorky and others. In 1950s she workes in Atelier Roger Lacourière, where she met Picasso, Miró, Chagall, Masson and where she introduced her friend Hans Hartung. Her work was greatly influenced by Einstein’s theories of time and space and she incorporated these revolutionary ideas into her work. Haass has been the subject of extensive retrospectives by Czech émigré Art historian Petr Spielmann at the Museum Bochum, Germany in 1975 and the Olomouc Museum of Art, Czech Republic. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Cleveland Museum of Art and many others.
