Otakar Hudeček (1924-2007) was born and lived most of his life in Olomouc. In 1957, in the complete seclusion of socialist Olomouc he started a “micro-revolution” in Czech painting of the 1960s. His intimate,
strongly expressive impasto portraits and self-portraits were then closest parallel in the work of the London-based Frank Auerbach. He stopped exhibiting in 1965, and continued to make prints and by the early 1980s, he had fallen silent artistically. The rest of his life translated and self-published the works of Rudolf Steiner
as well as his own artistic reliefs.
Otakar Hudeček was an occultist in a double sense. On the one hand he was fascinated by Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy, and on the other hand his work was to remain undiscovered. We dedicate the evening to a reading from Hudeček’s literary and artistic reflections published from the 1960s to the 1990s in samizdat.
