Ludmila Padrtová

Třeboň 1931 – Prague 2016

Painter, draughtsman. First lady of Czech abstraction. Cause of political background of her family she could not study at university. In 1955 she married prominent Czech post-war theoretician and critic Jiří Padrta. He taught her in the avant-garde tendencies of post-war western art. In 1956 she began with radical abstract art, close to french lyrical abstraction, tachism and influenced by Far East calligraphy. Around 1960 she „invented“ the technique of dripping. 1961 she abandonned the painting and untill 2011 never worked again. In 2011 begins the late work of Padrtová. Since that time is her work re-discovered and new appreciated.
