Václav Chad - Imaginary landscape III. (with yellow torso)

Václav Chad

Břeclav 1923 – Zlín 1945

Painter, draughtsman, Résistance fighter and the legend of Czech young WWII Avant-garde. Studied at Škola umění Zlín (1939–1943). In wartime Zlín he was a leader of the avant-garde circle of youngsters (Kafka, Schmidtová, Cap, Hudeček). At the beginning he was influenced by the example of expressionism and cubism, later mostly by surrealism. With his own piercing virtuosity he re-intepreted the works of old and new masters (Grünewald, Breughel, Goya, van Gogh, Munch, Gauguin or Klee). His work even as torso fascinates with sharpened existentialism, brutal blasphemy, gender and sexual openness; in many ways anticipates the post-war tendencies. He was shot down on escape by Gestapo February 24th 1945. His work can be found in National Gallery, Prague, Prague City Gallery, Regional Gallery of fine Arts, Zlín and many private collections.
