At the outset of the final year of his exile in Voronezh, Osip Mandelstam wrote the ode, which many believe was supposed to save his life yet; according to others, it actually broke his neck. An ambiguous, multi-layered, formally classical work that constantly oscillates between irony and apotheosis is still a conundrum. The ode was published in bilingual format, for the first time with a Czech translation. The edition has been accompanied by photographs from the NKVD archive, a text by Nadezhda Mandelstam and a biographical note.
